C.E.O. Cube Desk — Poltrona Frau (Lella & Massimo Vignelli)
Design & Concept
The C.E.O. Cube series is conceived as a “micro-architecture”: furniture that structures and defines space, not just fills it. The Desk version has an asymmetric configuration — one side rests on a rotating cube storage unit, the opposite side on a leg — giving both visual balance and strong functional identity.
There is an alternative Easy Desk version with a symmetrical two-leg structure, for those who prefer a more balanced / open leg layout.
Materials & Finishes
Tops and legs are built with double panelling with beveled / rounded edges. The outer surfaces are either upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather (from the Color System) or veneered in Canaletto walnut.
There is a central leather-inset panel across the top surface, adding contrast and tactile richness.
Beneath the top: the under-structure panels are made of wood-fibre (MDF or similar), finished in a textured black lacquer / paint to conceal mechanical / structural details, and provide aesthetic depth.
Functional Features
The rotating cube: One side of the desk is supported by a cube unit that can rotate on itself. This cube houses two accessory drawers, a locking filing drawer, and an open-compartment side with a grid of polished aluminium shelves. The open side is often upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather.
Cable / electrification management: The frame includes tubular metal supports and cross bars, with dedicated channels to route wiring. Cable access is well considered so the desk keeps a clean, uncluttered appearance.
Optional modesty panel: There is an option for an aluminium modesty panel, fully upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather, coordinated with the central leather panel. For more formal/private settings this adds refinement.
Aesthetic & Visual Identity
Strong contrast of materials: leather vs walnut veneer, polished metal vs matte black under-panels. These contrasts highlight edges, form, and craftsmanship.
The asymmetry (one side cube + one side leg) gives visual weight and a sculptural presence. It becomes both focal piece and functional workspace. It feels prestigious, dramatic, yet very refined.
Edge treatment (bevels / rounded) and upholstery give a soft, tactile border to what otherwise could be a sharp, angular form. These details attract touch and invite closer attention.
Dimensions & Customization
Sample dimensions (one listing) are ~ 255 cm length × 135 cm depth × 75 cm height, though Poltrona Frau offers several finish, upholstery, cube/leg placements and configuration options.
Upholstery / finishing choices are wide: various Pelle Frau® leather colours, walnut veneer, option to mix or match leather vs wood surfaces. The interior of drawers, the cube open shelf, the external surfaces can be customized.
Positioning & Suitability
This is clearly a prestige / executive-level desk: suitable for CEOs, boardroom use, or offices where the furniture reflects the brand or persona of leadership.
Best in spaces that allow the desk to be viewed from multiple angles, so the cube element and material contrasts are appreciated. Lighting helps bring out textures (leather grain, wood veneer).
Works particularly well in environments combining classic luxury with modern minimalism: wood panels, leather, but balanced with metal, open cabinetry, and refined design details.
